Since the housing bubble burst and the economic collapse, we have heard every Tom, Dick and Harry on the conservative side blame the poor people and liberal programs for it happening. I had a hard time with this fact seeing the GOP was in control of the congress until 2006 and the Presidency until 2008.
I took a look at the GOP platform in 2000 and reaffirmed my position that the housing bubble was created by the GOP agenda.
"Homeownership is central to the American dream, and Republicans want to make it more accessible for everyone. That starts with access to capital for entrepreneurs and access to credit for consumers. Our proposals for helping millions of low-income families move from renting to owning are detailed elsewhere in this platform as major elements in Governor Bush's program for a New Prosperity.
For those families, and for all other potential homebuyers, low interest rates make mortgages affordable and open up more housing opportunities than any government program."
This was not just a George W. Bush agenda, this was a Republican agenda. Since the housing bubble burst the conservatives were quick to blame the very people they proposed to help in this platform, ironic, huh?
The American people heard, "people were buying houses they couldn't afford", this was the rallying cry.
The Community Reinvestment Act was at fault, the government forced banks to lend to people that were too poor to afford the houses.
The GOP plan to help these poor people afford these houses was not to fight for higher wages and benefits, like LIBERALS DO, instead they wanted to use your tax dollars.
The GOP wanted to take federal rental assistance and use it toward a down payment on a home.
This is first of all, a give away to the banksters. Taking money from the treasury, the people's money, and giving it to Wall Street through this program.
Second, if the people needed federal rental assistance, common sense leads me to believe they cannot afford a home.
This was their plan for getting those poor people into the homes they couldn't afford.
Implement the "American Dream Down Payment" program, which will allow a half million families who currently draw federal rental assistance to become homeowners, and allow families receiving federal rental payments to apply one year's worth of their existing assistance money toward the purchase of their own first home thus becoming independent of any further government housing assistance. This approach builds upon our long standing commitment to resident management of public housing and other initiatives.
The conservatives of the GOP base, the Koch Bros and Wall Street have pushed their agenda onto the American people.
The people's money belongs to the people. It is part of the "commons", we all own it.
Wall Street wants it all, which is why they have taken control of the GOP and through Rep.Paul Ryan (R-WI) they have their eyes set on the biggest prize, the Social Security trust fund. A 2.5 trillion dollar account just waiting for them to gamble with.
Time to take control of our Government and away from the banksters
