All they want to do is fly.
Occupy Wall Street is, I think, a protest against a system that creates nothing, it just takes. The system's games are not generative, they're de-generative. This is the meta meaning of 'sustainability.' When people say sustainable, they can be referring to a lot of different cosmetic concepts (geothermal, manufacturing, urban gardening, renewable energy, LED lighting, etc. etc. etc.) , but the meta concept in each instance is the same: Are you playing constructive or de-constructive games? Zero sum or positive sum games? Sustainable or unsustainable games? Occupy Wall Street is, ultimately, a protest against unsustainable games and the people who play them.
The protesters arrested yesterday on the Brooklyn Bridge represent the most creative generation living in the most creative nation on earth. No doubt they have roots in every language, culture, science, art form and evolutionary instinct in the human species. And yet daily, on the island they share, they are forced to confront the exclusionary and monological narratives of------investment banks? No wonder they're pissed.
Occupy Wall Street expresses the deep and desperate resentment of the most creative Americans that they, and we as a nation, are being left out of the new narratives springing up around the world. Other countries are cooking creatively and meanwhile here in the U.S. we are investing in-----war? Talk about an unsustainable game.
Our bad taste in national narratives has become the bad taste in the mouth of the world. Those children of the world sitting on the Brooklyn Bridge? They can correct this problem, and they know it. They have stories to tell that are not the same old stories. Visions that are not blueprints of the past. They hear music that has never been heard and are possessed by notions that have never been tried. They are not afraid to fail and learn from it. They embrace the unknown instead of fearing it. They are protesting the fact that the big players in American politics, business and banking are incapable of seeing or supporting their idea of the future, much less investing in it.
They are getting arrested for squatting on the Brooklyn Bridge, a symbol of America's past glory, like birds who have come home to roost, when what they really want to do is fly.
