How do we take the very same corrosive political expenditures out of every level of government in this country that The United States Supreme Court has not only welcomed in, but has even laid a Red Carpet for? How do we go head to head against Koch/Scaife/DeVos/BUSHCO in the very political system that they feel that they have legitimately bought and paid for, and come out of that fight with their personal empires as trophies of our political conquest? When ALEC, The Heritage Foundation, American Enterprise Institute, Americans for Prosperity, etc., and individual hired guns of the ilk of Karl Rove, Rush Limbaugh, Roger Ailes, Glenn Beck, etc., have staked out presumptively and previously unassailable offensive (pun intended) political strategies and structures how can we render them literally unseen and unheard, actually render them popularly and politically irrelevant, while not even making any direct effort to do so?
Or at least how do we do so if we continue to refuse to understand and appreciate what power awaits us by the simple act of demanding the innate and immutable right of the 99% to propel our society forward by convening ourselves as The Second American Constitutional Convention?
When we, en masse, decide that we have actually had enough of the status quo, decide to wipe the slate clean, decide to direct our growth and progress in any direction we deem necessary and desireable, the power to do so resides in our own hands. As was already proved in 1787, the people of this free country face no challenge too large, and no prior restriction of any sort when we act on our demand that we be allowed to meet in Constitutional Convention Assembled.
Hypothetically (and certainly not indicating a personal preference that we will or should proceed thusly), our national Occupy experience could grow and evolve so that it gains a level of popular support that would make it possible for the various General Assemblies (or at least those of the largest gatherings) to adopt unto themselves the title of The Peoples Constitutional Convention (or somesuch). And so constituted they would have every right and ability to create a draft of a proposed document designed to be the charter under which We The People would order our national public affairs moving forward from the date of ratification thereof. And the process of ratification would be such as contained therein, and would, of necessity, consist of procedures necessary for showing, and sufficient to show overwhelming popular support throughout the nation. ("Overwhelming" in this context to mean certainly not less than 60% of the population, and shown to be broadly based demographically and geographically. But certainly nothing so silly as our current provision that the inhabitants of the most sparsely setteled parts of our land, based solely on this characteristic are empowered to control the outcome of every important decision that we collectively now face).
So, anyway, we had our convention, and it did its job as thoroughly, professionally, and intelligently as we would certainly expect and demand, and we, being sufficiently satisfied with the outcome of our chosen form of effort, did thereafter ratify same. Then what? I mean, it's clear that if Congress (which is clearly inferior in most important aspects to the remainder of the body politic) were to have issued prior approval for the above described undertaking the end result would not even be in question. And maybe that is sufficient reason for us to take the extra step of forcing Congress to give us what we want. But let's say that we didn't consult Congress, but still did everything exacrly as if we had done so. Would, under any ultimate evaluation, the Will Of The People be any less validly expressed under the one scenario than under the other? (And if we did do something, either way, and some small number of clueless fools did make signs saying "We're the 1%, and we absolutely, positively prohibit everything you want", my advice to them would be that they not march in traffic.)
