I've been reading some of the various diaries from people talking about the fringe elements that have been appearing at the various OccupyThemAll gatherings, and it made me think about the fact that it's not just the severely mentally ill and/or tinfoil hat crowd that present a conundrum for the movement.
I know we've had lots of conversation about the fact that the vast majority of Republican voters are in fact voting against their own economic self-interest, either because they hold onto the hope that they'll be in the 1% some day, or because they are voting on social issues. Regardless of whether we are going to convert any of these people to the more progressive agenda (unlikely in the main, even with some success on the edges), they are already part of the 99% and we need to think about ways to turn this from an Oppressed Left vs. Wealthy Right movement to a more simple Masters of the Universe vs. Everybody Else agenda.
(continues below the fold)
As I see it, the real thrust behind the Occupy movement is to end (or more realistically curb) the rampant corruption present in both the political and corporate world. Without any real input into the process, the 99% have no chance of making the world a better place through involvement in government or perhaps even society in general.
Alas, I have no pat solution to this problem, but I'm writing this diary to raise the discussion point that rather than say "well, these guys are too right wing for us, these guys are too drunk for us, these folks insist on smoking around us, so none of them can be real members of the movement" we need to say something like "we know that we disagree on a whole range of topics, but frankly if we don't band together to grab back some semblance of democracy none of us are going to get what we want."
