With tonight’s Water Cooler I am going to kick off the OWS DC Bread Report.
This is where I report on the cooperative effort between me and some of your fellow Kossacks to provide fresh French bread to the DC Occupy Wall St protesters.
For those that don’t know I do a weekly bread post on Sunday’s call (uncreatively) Sunday Bread. I am a long time baker and love to share my love of bread.
I have been trying to find a way to support the OWS folks here in DC, but a lack of money was really holding me back. Then I came up with this idea, I’d bake all the bread that others would pay for the ingredients and the transport costs of.
I’d donate my time and the electricity to bake the bread, Kossacks would donate the money for the ingredients. It costs $2.50 per two loaf batch of bread or 1.25 a loaf to bake it and get it down to the protesters.
I also promised that I’d give regular reports about the process, how much was donated and how much bread was given away. I put this idea up in this post this morning.
Well, the response has been huge already! We have raised enough, just under $200, for 157 loaves of bread to be delivered!
My plan is to deliver them in batches of 40 each time, that way the bread won’t go to waste and I won’t keel over trying to make it all at once. The first expected bread delivery is planned for Thursday. They will be every two or three days after that depending on what the folks at the kitchen there think is the right timing.
Now, if you have been looking for a way to pitch in and you are not close to DC or any of the other major cities, or if you just can’t take the time off to be there all the time, here is a way for you to help!
I will keep making and bringing bread down the protesters as long as there is a stream of money to pay for it. If I had any money myself I’d just foot the cost, but being out of work means very little coming in.
So, if you’d like to be part of this effort all you have to do is message me and I’ll send you the Paypal information.
So, what do you think Kossacks? The floor is yours.
Just a quick update we are now up to 197 loaves paid for so far!
