This week on, "Can't Win For Losing", we have TARGET. You may remember Target here on KOS for funding various uber-Conservative and anti-gay candidates.
Target has been targetted (hah) by the Florida Family Association (icky, but sometimes you gotta click to know your enemy). Why?
Target is a leading advertiser during Degrassi show which directs teens and children to an organization that will encourage them to embrace alternative lifestyles.
Target is the only major retail chain that is advertising during this shameful show. Please send your email to Target officials.
Degrassi promo directs teens and children to group that will encourage them to embrace alternative lifestyles with Target as a leading advertiser.
This site is so full of anti-gay hate that it's like a centerpiece of the Religious Right. How dare Degrassi show gays or transgendered in a positive light? And just as bad:
Teen Nick is now including in their pro-gay, pro-transgender show Degrassi a promo for TheTrevorHelpline.org. The promo states in part "The Trevor helpline is a free and confidential service that's open for gay and questioning youth. Be proud of who you are. Saving lives."
You may know the Trevor Project more as a welcome voice for gay teen suicide prevention, with resources, counseling, and education for suicidal teens. (I actually had to investigate the site to make sure this wasn't a troll; to complain about Degrassi, sure, but to go after The Trevor Project? Really?
The actual episode in question actually had the gay character, a star quarterback, refuse reparative therapy for his homosexuality! The Florida Family Association is even irked that a gay character could possibly also be a football captain:
Click here for info on Riley's (highly unlikely) casting as open gay football captain and starting quarterback.
HOW DARE HE! I think their anger over the fact that a gay teen might also be a good athlete, or gay and popular, is what really points out how disconnected they are from reality. They really just want gays to be in a closet, contemplating suicide.
The hate goes on and on, with lots of bold and underline. I'm tired of looking at it but I encourage you to do so just to see the extent of the hatred existing today. The site also provides several (click-on-this email, phone numbers, direct email addresses) ways to contact Target and complain, and a template letter to send. They make it super easy for someone to send Target a complaint.
While the left and Target have had their differences in the past, let's not ignore this. Degrassi is a great outreach to today's youth, gay or straight or transgendered; it encourages acceptance. That can only be good! That Target is the only major retailer to advertise here (besides being pretty smart going after the tween market) deserves a nod of thanks from all of us. After all, The Florida Family Association is sure sending them plenty of email.
NOTE: All of their email goes to 6 names employees plus investorrelations@target.com. That seems a bit, well, juvenile. I would suggest sending target a note using their online form.
