Joe Paterno's gone - such a maddening sad end to a historic career that absolutely would not have been necessary if he had spoken up & not enabled this horrific behavior years ago.
Let's move on to "this day in history." Here's one for Mr. Keith! On this date in 1942, Winston Churchill, discussing the recent victory over Rommel at El Alamein, Egypt, said
Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.
OR, the Beginning of the Beguine! :D
On this date in 1961, the satirical anti-war novel Catch-22 by Joseph Heller was published. And {insert image of me crawling to a safe locale before this admission}, I have to confess; I've never read Catch - 22. I guess I should, huh? ;D
Let's Countdown!
#5 "Occupy Day 55" AKA "Occupy Wall Street" AKA "Occupy Berkeley" - Protestors at Occupy Berkeley were beaten by police, and it looks like more police action in Oakland is imminent. Occupy protestors interrupted a foreign policy speech by Bat$hit Bachmann in SC today; the ironies there are just too much! One, Bat$hit's vast knowledge, I'm sure, OF foreign policy, and, two, there are Occupy protests in SC! DAMN! Cops in Berkeley were in full riot gear. Yea, riot gear is necessary for unarmed students. Oakland city council folk who would really like for Occupy to go away were shouted down by protestors. Check out Montreal! A protestor in Burlington, VT died of a possibly self - inflicted gunshot wound. There's an Occupy Harvard??!! Marco Amaral is an Occupy Cal organizer; he wasn't surprised by the cops' actions. The UC system has really really REALLY been hammered over the last few years. OK, I'm about over this guy. "Chris"?! SERIOUSLY??!! There's another general strike down the pike for students on November 15? OK, shallow comment here, but I think Tom Hayden's sick; he looks incredibly thin & hasn't looked good in awhile. But, if anyone knows their protests, it's this guy! The economy is way worse now than it was in the 60s; students have so much debt after graduation, and tuition rates at even state institutions are sky - rocketing. Mr. Hayden's not real crazy about protestors interrupting Bat$hit's little shtick; he thinks the temptation to overreach is too great.
#4 "OOPS" AKA "The Grate Debate" - Today's GOBP will think Governor Secession's little memory loss is folksy, so I stand by my nominee prediction! ;D He's reading the "Top Ten" list on David Letterman's show tonight? HA! "Herb" Cain was asked about his character during a debate on the economy, and the crowd booed. Those were probably the same folk who cheered over 300 people executed in TX & letting an uninsured person die. "Herb" also called Nancy Pelosi "Princess Nancy." Keep oozing class there, honey! Nia Malika Henderson gets bat$hit duty again tonight. She thinks Governor Secession's done; well, lots of people think Governor Secession's done. I don't think so! ;D OK, she said that DC were essentially full of "great debaters", and you can't function in office without that skill. Then, how does she explain GWB?! He didn't do much debating! "Herb"'s poll numbers might be high, but most people in actual political circles don't think he's a viable candidate.
"Time Marches On!" - Walt Disney was an FBI rat? KITTY!! :D There's a bar for doggies across the pond.
#3 "James Unworthy" AKA "Heir Today..." - So, Little Jimmy Murdoch was back in front of that parliamentary committee today doing his best Sgt. Shultz impersonation about hacking in the family business, he took offense to a member of that committee calling the family business a mafia enterprise, and anyone who said Little Jimmy knew anything is a big fat stinking liar. How was that sum up? ;D As it turns out, the family business had spied on the guy who used the term mafia! And, in an off - topic observation, what's with the little fake flowers on everyone? J. Edgar Hoover claimed there was no mafia, either, so Little Jimmy's got something in common with him! Little Jimmy signed off on a big - time settlement without reading the fine print? $HIT! Ed Pilkington is The Guardian's NYC guy. He thinks Little Jimmy's toast. Uh, didn't the stock holders let Little Jimmy & Pop keep their jobs? A couple hundred cops in Great Britain are investigating, and there are investigations going on here, too. HOWEVER, in this Congress, oversight won't get real far. Uh, I don't know much about "Harry Potter"'s parents, but I thought the evil witch dude killed them. How could Pirate Rupert spy on them? :)
WPITW - A CA businessman created a tea bagger TV network who just might have bilked some folk & pi$$ed off some baseball card folk. Senator McCentury wants yet another corporate tax holiday to give trickle down 1 more chance. Man on Dog sponsored an award for the guy who allegedly raped the kids at Penn State University. Well, he tipped off Senator Loverboy of the investigation of his extra curricular activities, too. I don't suppose anyone has asked him about that detail?
#1 "Pipe Dream" AKA "Slick Response" - The Keystone pipeline decision has been put off until after the election. Talk about your timing! ;D Mark Ruffalo is happy with today's announcement; he was part of the big 'ol protest on Sunday that surrounded the White House - literally. He thinks Occupy has lit a proverbial fire under a lot of folk upset about a great many issues, so that might have helped propel the pipeline timeline. A new group is going to study the environmental impact of this pipeline.
