The latest talks with Cat Food Commission 2 has the Democrats once again caving on revenues, and possibly the safety net, while the Republicans get 90% of what they want, AGAIN!
The latest shell game being set up by the Super Committee calls for tax increases being postponed and handed off to the standard tax committees to come up with the taxes next year. How is this any different than what we have now?! It's not!
From the New York Times:
Panels seeks to defer taxes.
Deficit Panel Seeks to Defer Details on Raising Taxes
As the deficit panel enters a final frenetic week of negotiations, Republicans and Democrats said they hoped to give broadly worded instructions to the regular tax-writing committees of Congress — the House Ways and Means Committee and the Senate Finance Committee — to come up with a certain amount of revenue after the panel completes its work this month.
The chairmen of the tax-writing committees, Senator Max Baucus, Democrat of Montana, and Representative Dave Camp, Republican of Michigan, have said they would welcome such instructions.
Do you see who's already betraying the Democratic party again? That's right, Senator Baucus of Montana! The guy who messed up the Health Care bill so bad it turned the public against the Democrats.
Harry Reid should be run out of town for appointing Baucus to the Committee. He knew exactly what he was doing. He knew the committee would deadlock, and he needed someone on the committee who could cave to the Republican demands without taking too much political heat back in his home state, and Baucus is the man.
Make no mistake, this would be a complete cave, a betrayal, and could very well cost the Democrats big next year.
In their latest written proposal, Democrats on the panel said they would raise $350 billion through “miscellaneous revenue provisions” and establish procedures to speed action on “tax reform generating $650 billion” more. The procedures could clear a path in the Senate by limiting senators’ ability to amend or filibuster the legislation.
In their recipe for follow-up legislation, Democrats stipulate that the individual tax rate should be no higher than 35 percent, and that the new tax code should be “as progressive as current law.”
By contrast, Republicans would direct the tax-writing committees to set lower rates, and they say the amount of new revenue should not exceed $500 billion.
Any agreement that postpones the tax increases is a complete and total joke, and the joke is meant to fool US, the base of the Democratic party! There isn't a snowballs chance in hell the tax increases would pass the house, and you can be sure Lieberman and one or two Dems would vote against it in the Senate. And you can be sure that anything coming out of the house will actually give bigger tax breaks to the 1% and probably increase taxes on the rest of us. And of course the Dems would compromise again, so the end results of this deficit panel could be, cuts in Social Security and Medicare, Tax cuts for the 1%, and tax increases on the rest of us. But to top it off, the tax cuts for the 1% could actually offset any deficit benefits from spending cuts and we could actually end up with a BIGGER deficit!
We have to get on the phones to our representatives and tell them that postponing revenue increases is completely unacceptable and a total betrayal of the American public. They should get their butts over to the offices of the Super Committee Dems and tell them, WE WONT BE FOOLED AGAIN!
UPDATE: Krugman sees through this fraud and just posted something on his blog,
Superfraud
UPDATE 2: We can stop this! After reading some of the comments, it sounds like many people have given up. I don't believe it's too late. Look what they did with the keystone pipeline. Somebody leaked this info to the NYT as a trial balloon, we have a chance to shoot it down by calling our Reps and chewing them out!
