A new 30 second TV ad released today by MoveOn.org Political Action hits Democrats on the Supercommittee for proposing deep cuts to Medicare benefits, telling them "Don't be stupid, be Democrats." The ad follows multiple media reports that the Supercommittee could vote for deep cuts in vital programs, like Medicare, while deferring on revenues to a later date. The ad will air on national cable beginning this week, just before the Supercommittee deadline on November 23rd.
Hey, SuperCommittee Democrats, Cutting Medicare benefits? Are you crazy or just plain stupid? 78% of Americans oppose those medicare benefit cuts. Have you seen the news lately? People aren't just marching in the streets. They're standing there 24/7 because they're tired of the 99% getting dumped on. And cutting Medicare benefits is so far right that Fox News is about to offer you your own show.
Don't be Stupid. Be Democrats. Democrats don't cut Medicare benefits.
In addition to the ad, MoveOn will be holding rallies outside the local offices of Supercommittee Democrats tomorrow as part of a broader national "We are the 99%" day of action.
Justin Ruben, Executive Director of MoveOn.org. explains the message:
"Our message to Super Committee Democrats is clear: don't be stupid and don't sell out core Democratic principles. We need Democrats to stand up for the 99% and make sure the 1% pay their fair share--not cut vital programs like Medicare.
MoveOn's 5 million members have fought tirelessly to elect Democrats who will protect the social safety net, not turn around and gut it to appease far-right Republicans. Any Democrat who agrees to a deal to cut Medicare benefits will not only be betraying the people who elected them to office, they'll go down in history as the Democrats who sold out the 99%, just to protect the 1%.
It's a shame people have to run ads like this to remind Democrats to be Democrats, but we do. Keep the pressure on SuperCommittee Democrats to vote like Democrats!
Which side are you on, SuperCommittee Democrats?
As true today as when it was written:
A Song by Florence Patton Reece
Come all of you good workers
Good news to you I'll tell
Of how that good old union
Has come in here to dwell
Chorus
Which side are you on?
Which side are you on?
Which side are you on?
Which side are you on?
My daddy was a miner
And I'm a miner's son
And I'll stick with the union
Till every battle's won
They say in Harlan County
There are no neutrals there
You'll either be a union man
Or a thug for J.H. Blair
Oh, workers can you stand it?
Oh, tell me how you can
Will you be a lousy scab
Or will you be a man?
Don't scab for the bosses
Don't listen to their lies
Us poor folks haven't got a chance
Unless we organize
The 99% doesn't have a chance unless it organizes and occupies.
