A Warren video on the ills of our healthcare system appeared at MoveOn.org a few days ago. In it she focuses on the plight of middle class families who have or are in danger of losing everything because of medical bankruptcy.
Warren demonstrates again in this video, as in the one a few months ago that went viral, why she will destroy Scott Brown and win back the peoples' Senate seat for Massachusetts progressives. In a phrase, she can talk common sense. That won't be enough to get us a sane health care system, but it will a damned fine start.
I can't find any date for the video; I suspect it was actually taped some years ago. Still, it is as relevant today as it was whenever it was shot. I haven't seen it posted here yet, so enjoy. It is completely captioned.
Here's a few of her more memorable lines:
0:40 "Nobody reads a health insurance contract until you've been denied coverage."
1:20 "There are some really embarassing data ((on health care outcomes)) out there about how much better Canadians do... Europeans do ... Japanese do..."
1:50 "The fact that we're going broke paying for our health care does not mean we're getting the best health care."
2:05 "The data didn't show these tiny little differences and slight problems. The data were like an iron frying pan that went "Clunk!" Families going broke because of health care payments."
3:00 "75% of families who ended up in bankruptcy in the aftermath of a serious medical problem had health insurance at the onset of the illness or accident."
3:40 "...The system is so misdesigned, in terms of how big the bill can be and how narrow the protection ... is"
4:30 "It's like a one-two punch. They are less likely to be able to earn the incomes that they need... the bills, just go through the roof."
4:50 "There's a huge amount of financial misery that we have imposed on middle-class American families.. they get sick and they are at risk for losing it all."
6:25: "The message is beginning to leak out. No one is safe."
