Yesterday the occupy movement gathered from across the state in Olympia used a wonderful weapon in the capitol rotunda. We gathered around the capitol Christmas tree and sang our protest carols to the legislators and their uniformed security forces.
These anonymously written well crafted protest carols create a mood of jolly anger spiked with wicked humor and assertive truth.
This protest tactic actually evoked hidden smiles from some of the State Police Troopers. It has the power to connect in ways is beyond the impact of pure raw anger.
Intelligence, creativity and humor are qualities that abound in Occupy protestors. Let's not forget to use these powerful assets.
With are so many other Christmas carols yet to adapt, I'm hoping for some Kossack inspired additions to the Occupy songbook.
Tax the Rich (Let It Snow)
Oh the cost of living's frightful
Some relief would be delightful
So don't leave us in the ditch
Tax the rich, tax the rich tax the rich
Oh,
We need our schools and health care,
And you know we've paid our fair share
That's why we're here to say
Make them pay, make them pay make them pay!
When we finally win the fight
How they'll hate doing what they are told
Cause whenever we trust the banks
We get left out in the cold
Oh,
Closing schools is not fair
Or eliminating health care
So here's an easy fix
Tax the rich, tax the rich, tax the rich!
No More Cuts (Jingle Bells)
Slashing Basic Health
And cutting teacher pay
The safety net will fail
Crashing all the way (ow ow ow)
Enough is enough
That's why we're here to say
It's time that we raise revenue
And make the bankers pay
Oh!
No more cuts!
No more cuts
No more cuts- no way!
It's time to raise more revenue
So make the bankers pay!
I'm Dreaming of a Fair Budget (I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas)
I'm dreaming of a fair budget
That doesn't sacrifice health care
Where our schools are thriving
And banks aren't conniving
How not to pay their share
I'm dreaming of a fair budget
With every lawmaker I write
May our struggles all be brought to light
In our solidarity tonight.
Occupy is Coming to Town (Santa Claus is Coming to Town)
Oh, you better watch out
You better not lie
You better shape up
I'm telling you why
Occupy is coming to town
We're making a fist
And shaking it twice
We're tired of always
Playing nice
Occupy is coming to town
It's here that we'll be sleeping
We'll stay the whole day through
We've sacrificed enough, now go
Tell the rich to pay their dues
So we're holding our ground
We're pitching our tent
Until you stand up for the 1 percent
Occupy is coming to town
We've heard enough excuses
We're sick of budget cuts
And we're not buying into it
Till the banks get off their butts
So we're holding our ground
We're pitching our tent
Until you stand up
To the 1 percent
Occupy is coming to town!
It the Most Critical Time of the Year (It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year)
It the Most Critical Time of the Year
With our health care costs rising
and Dems compromising
Oh, this much is clear
It's the most critical time of the year
Let's protect all of the people in need
While the banks are foreclosing
We'll be here exposing
Corruption and greed
Let's protect all of the people in need
It's the most critical time of the year
So do right by tax payers
Don't fear the nay-sayers
Save your careers
It's the most critical time of the year
