The Death Penalty Was Dropped Today
Today, Mumia Abu-Jamal got some good. He no longer has to be on death row after the Philadelphia DA did not decided to prosecute a new death penalty case as reported by the AP.
However, his quest for a new trial will most likely fade away. He just be another prisoner doing life like every other person doing life in prison.
For some people like myself, this brings a sign of relief. I never wanted Abu-Jamal to get near the death house and I wanted him to have the unlimited time to prepare the evidence of a retrial.
For me, he is one of the most important social critics of our society today. His commentaries provide deep insight into the prison-industrial and military-industrial complex today.
I hope that he will use his time in prisoners is to mentor younger prisoners to become journalists so they write, express, and film the experience of a person in prison.
I do not know whether he actually committed the crime. It is more important that this man continue to tell about life in a gritty prison and the talk about the conditions that pervade the prison-industrial complex.
