Last month I wrote a diary about giving.
Specifically I pledged to...
...do a diary a month... for a year... each dedicated to a different charity.
I'll set up one of those fancy online giving pages (suggestions on how to do this please) and match the DKOS community up to a thousand dollars a pop.
That way I can turn my 12K into (maybe) our 24K.
And a few days later... with many thanks to you all... WE gave to the tune of $1800+... to Shane's Inspiration... a charity that builds wheelchair accessible playgrounds for kids.
(If you're just seeing this now... hint, hint... nudge, nudge... another chance to give.)
Well now it's December, which means we're ready for round #2...
UPDATE: As of 1:52PST we're already to $732! Now the recs are going to help, but it'll feel better -- and we like feeling better --- if we can get to the full 1K in cash. Right? I mean RIGHT?!?
So, I've been around these parts since mid 2003 (good Lord that's like 8 years now) and what I write can basically be summed up with two words... booby humor.
I mean -- YES -- what I'm TRYING to accomplish is 22.3% greater: mock those who do/think/and act evil into submission (or at least entertain those of us who are forced to exist in their air space).
But in the end... seen by aliens from that kick-ass new planet in a habitable zone (hello up there!)... it's just... um... slightly elevated, political, booby humor.
Now, in these many years while I've done my shtick I've watched... with awe and honest amazement... as other, more mature, diarists (specifically and relentlessly TexDem) have used their pile of words to support and comfort and pay homage to those who have offered up their days, nights... their lives... in the pursuit of some version of a better America (i.e. giving idiots the right to write and read... booby humor).
I speak of the folks behind Netroots For The Troops.
In case you don't know what they do...
Each year for the past three years, we at the non-profit project Netroots For The Troops™ have raised money to send hundreds of specially designed Care Packages to U.S. combat troops deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. These packages have included the practical, such as gloves, gel shoe insoles, socks, sand scarves, powdered energy drinks and LED flashlights, as well as the recreational, such as DVDs, CDs and comic books.
All told, in those three years we have shipped 800 Care Packages to military personnel in two different Brigades of the 3rd Marine Division in cooperation with their Family Readiness Office, and to elements of the 101st Airborne in cooperation with Operation Rakkasans.
This year our goal is 600 Care Packages. That's no small matter. Acquiring the products to go into the packages and shipping them overseas will cost $100,000. To meet that goal, we need your help!
It's little comforts, for people far away from home and family, who are forced, on a day to day basis, to face the deep truths of humanity.
And here's where I humbly ask you to GIVE.
My donation page is HERE: SYFPH... and GIVE.
And if you give... I'll give more.
The rules...
--I'll give 2 bucks for any YOU give.
--I'll give 2 bucks for every recommendation that this diary gets. So, if your bank account is hurting... there's an easy way for you to get in the game.
--Pass this diary around to someone. Toss it on your Facebook page. Tattoo it on your ass. Part of the goal is just to expand horizons and see how people make life better for other people. Then if someone you know gives... it's added to the pile
A week from now, I'll tally it up and add my hopefully-more-than-two cents.
And if this goes well, come January, we'll meet here and do it all again.
