So, with all the proposals floating around to drug-test various recipients of government benefits (because, of course, those people are spending that money to buy drugs, not to support their families, and we're basing this on exactly zero evidence), Tennessee state Rep. G.A. Hathaway (D-Memphis) has a new group of people we should be drug-testing.
Lawmakers.

That's right. See, our legislators are collecting government benefits (a.k.a. their salary for serving in the legislature.) So if they're going to receive that benefit from the government, why not make sure they're not spending it on drugs?
Now, to be frank, I'm against drug-testing, whether by the government or your employer. If your drug use isn't affecting your job performance, and you're not stealing from your employer to support a drug habit, it's really none of your employer's business what you do in your spare time.
But, if lawmakers are going to subject recipients of government benefits to the demeaning experience of being tested for drug use (when there's no evidence that they're even doing drugs), why don't they put their money where their mouth is and take a drug test themselves?
I have no evidence that any lawmakers are using drugs, though it would certainly explain a lot of the new laws being passed. At the very least, though, they'd get to see exactly how humiliating it is to pee in a cup while somebody looks over your shoulder.
