You are about to have a day off from Daily Kos. It's a Saturday, no less -- the prime day for phone banking.
I'd like to suggest something for you to do while you're not reading (or writing on) DKos -- something to be proud of later.
See, we have an election here in California taking place on February 15 -- that's next Tuesday.
It's been a Republican seat but, looking at the registration figures, it's winnable -- especially with low turnout.
Let me tell you a bit about Senate District 17 -- and how you can spend your day off helping to shock the political world by helping to bring home an unexpected victory in a race that could determine whether Gov. Jerry Brown can govern with a legislative supermajority!
I wrote on this before, by the way (check it out!), and only got 5 comments. See that one for background. This is an example of why, in DK4, "Action" should be a top-level tag!
Here's the background: Republican George Runner's election to the Board of Equalization last November created a vacancy in an area that is prime for a Democratic pickup. Sharon Runner is attempting to take her husband's seat, but we are fortunate to have LACDP Regional Vice-Chair and CDP African American Caucus Chair Darren Parker as our endorsed candidate. Darren needs our help to reach out to Vote-By-Mail Voters this weekend to inform them that there is a better alternative to extending the Runner Family Dynasty.
Let's have Chris Guerrero of the state Democratic Party explain things:
We have said it before: 2010 was a banner year for Democrats in California. Our party swept every statewide office and even expanded our majority in the state legislature.
But as you know, the fight never stops, and with two special elections on February 15th, we now have the opportunity to send two more Democrats to the California State Senate.
We need your help.
Darren Parker is running for State Senate in Senate District 17, around northern Los Angeles and the Antelope Valley, and Ted Lieu is running in SD 28, which includes several communities on the L.A. County coast.
Both elections are likely to be low-turnout, and most voters won't know much about the candidates, so a few calls from a volunteer can make a really big difference.
Can you make 10 calls this weekend and send two more Democrats to help Governor Jerry Brown and Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg in the California State Senate?
It's easy to make a couple calls right from your living room with our online phone banking tool.
We'll provide you with phone numbers of important voters to turn out on Election Day and a script with the most effective things you can say to them.
Each candidate we elect to the State Senate brings one more vote to support Governor Jerry Brown’s budget and the policies that will help move California forward. All you need to do to help them get there is make 10 calls -- and I know once you've made five, you'll want to make five more.
Click here to get started with our easy, online, in-home phone banking tool right now and help send two more Democrats to the State Senate!
I look forward to working with you as we continue to ride our blue wave throughout California.

Imagine if we won this low-turnout election. Imagine if we won!
Then make it happen. Call for Darren Parker -- a Democrat willing to run to help us govern.
UPDATE:
And Chris Guerrero sends out another e-mail!
We are just a few days away from two Southern California special elections that can send two more Democrats to the State Senate.
But they can't win if Democrats in those districts don't know to go and vote -- click here to make 10 easy calls from home, right now, to tell them.
On February 15th, we have the chance to end the Runner Dynasty and elect Darren Parker for State Senate in SD 17.
We also have the opportunity to honor the legacy of the late Senator Jenny Oropeza and elect Ted Lieu for State Senate in SD 28.
Can you make 10 calls today and send these two Democrats to the California State Senate?
Each candidate elected to the State Senate brings one more vote to support Governor Jerry Brown’s budget and the policies that will help move California forward.
We look forward to working with you as we continue to ride our blue wave throughout California. Please join us and make 10 calls from home today!
