We all know that "Words Have Power". The Repubs have Frank Luntz advising them on just the right way to phrase a position to implant their ideas in the heads of "short soundbite" Americans. "Deathtax" instead of inheritance tax, "energy exploration" instead of oil drilling. Chosen statements must have an emotional element, good or bad to be effective. The Repubs have complete faith in this philosophy even using "Democrat Party"(emphasis on the "rat") instead of Democratic Party to describe the opposition. This brings me to my point.
The Democrats have been handed a golden opportunity to associate their party name with the most exciting global phenomenon in decades, the Egyptian and Mideastern "Democratic Revolutions". Think about it, the yearning in all souls to be free, to demand democracy when none has existed. Democracy Good! = Democrats Good!
It sounds simplistic but "democratic" is very positive emotionally especially in the context of current events. With hundreds of thousands of jubilant Egyptian faces celebrating new found democracy, the talking heads, even on Fox News, will be repeating the words "democracy" "democratic ideals" "moving toward democracy" etc. This all comes from a positive perspective and the repetition of this term will increase the market value of the word "Democratic" by implication. Even the Tea Party folks will find it hard to vilify the term democratic.
Democrats should seize this opportunity to positively anchor the party name to the ideal we all hold dear. "Democrats stand for democracy", "We are the party of democracy" "Democrats care about democracy", "Democrats believe in Democracy.
Let's associate the party name with this powerful political principle so that the gut reaction to the word "democratic" or "democrat" is positive and gives one a warm feeling inside. We must also live our convictions and support oppressed people who are yearning to oust their dictator and establish true democracy. Let's also make sure that real democracy continues to thrive in our own country.
