Frequently politicians, commentators and others who should know better refer to Israel as “the only democracy in the Middle East.”
Here’s what Gush-Shalom, an Israeli Peace Bloc, has to say:

Welcome to Gush-Shalom, Israeli Peace Bloc
The aim of this group of Israelis is to influence Israeli public opinion and lead it towards peace and conciliation with the Palestinian people.

The Only Democracy in the Middle East
• No separation between religion and state. Non Jews are discriminated in most areas.
• Religious laws dictate the life style of non-religious Israeli citizens.
• Even today, after 50 years of Independence, Israel has no constitution.
• 30% of all people under Israeli control do not enjoy civil or even human rights.
• Parts of the educational system are controled by the secret services.
• 80% of Israel’s resources belong to 10% of its citizens.
• More than 1000 people are held in administrative custody without being charged, and with no time limits.
• Israel is the only country that has a law allowing interrogators to use torture.
• All mass media channels are held by a handful of families.
• In Israel the government has the right to shut down a newspaper.
• Non Jewish citizens are forbidden from buying state owned land.
