First let me say THANK YOU. I was happy to see my first diary had support and people donated to my mom, Cheryl Hancock. She is running in a special election for Assembly in the WI 94th District. She is a proud Democrat and has been running for this seat since 2008. She is standing by the workers of the state and has been protesting all week! We need another Dem in the WI legislature and here is a chance. I know there are campaigns for recalls and I think that is great, but I also want people to be aware of this opporutunity to get another Dem elected in WI.
My mom has protested every day this week except for yesterday because she had to judge a High School gymnastic meet (very active community member). As I write she is on the road heading to Madison to attend today's rally's. This does not make her different than so many in WI and those from other states who are coming to participate. We come from a strong union family from past to present. My mom also has a degree in secondary education and has been on the local school board since 1996. To say she is pro education and teachers is an understatement. In fact her biggest cause is the school funding formula. She wants to help fix it. That's what got her interested in going to Madison. We also are a family that has alway believed in public service. My uncle is a past state senator in Iowa and my cousin Kirsten is a current Representative there.
What stands out to me and should stand out to many is there is a primary for this seat. The other candidate has said NOTHING. He hasn't taken a stand for the workers, he hasn't been to one rally, and he hasn't even issued a statement supporting the public sector workers. My mom is in this because she has courage of her convictions. She doesn't care if she will take a hit with moderates because she is standing up for what is right and what she believes in. I keep saying "my mom" but I suppose I should call her by her name to get that out there! Cheryl is one amazing woman. She is going to be texting me updates from the ground in Madison today and I will post when I can.
This picture was taken on Tuesday. Cheryl is on the left and is with her good friend Anita who is also on the School Board with her!
