You remember the 1986 animated film "An American Tail?" About these anamorphic Russian mice that were trying to migrate to America? "There Are No Cats in America?" And just what the hell has this got to do with anything at all? Well, stay with me.
It got me to thinking- what ever became of Fievel? We know that he "went west" in a sequel, and that he tried to do the straight-to-video thing briefly in the 90's. But then... nothing. He was retired. So, where is he? What's he doing?
Well I had a (maybe) great idea. Fievel needs a new gig. I think that he should become "Fievel- Immigrant Rights Activist." What? Stop laughing! I'm not finished yet! Look- he's done pretty well for himself in the US. If Republicans had their way, his mousy butt wouldn't have even been allowed off the boat. He'd be required to submit to registration checks in Arizona (he is, after all, a brown mouse) and he would be marginalized along with the rest of the immigrant communities in this country.
So lets bring him back out. Lets make right-wing blowhards debate an adorable immigrant mouse and let them tell Fievel that he and his kind aren't welcome here. He could take down Jan Brewer and Lou Dobbs and these Minutemen pricks in one fell, 90 minute made-for-TV animated special. Yeah, I know. Its been a while. He's been off the scene for a spell. So you know, we address that too:
"Hi. I'm Fievel. You may remember me from a few films back in the 80's, as my perilous journey as a new immigrant to your country with my family was documented in 'An American Tail.' I've since been working hard at various non-profit organizations and charity groups to lobby for the rights of immigrants to the United States..."
Hey, there have been worse ideas floated around out there. Just sayin'.
