Yes, for the first time in my adult life, I will not receive a daily newspaper. And if other teachers feel the same way, perhaps they should consider cancelling not only their own subscriptions, but their "Newspaper in the Classroom" subscriptions as well. More below the fold.
You see, my daily newspaper, the Milwaukee Journal/Sentinel, endorsed Scott Walker for governor. And in spite of several editorials they've run that have basically said, "Gee, we didn't think he'd actually do THIS," they continue to support him and pour blame on the Wisconsin 14. So I did some soul-searching and came to this sad conclusion: my only good reason for continuing my subscription was the daily puzzle section. Thinking that was not a compelling reason for buying a newspaper that's a shell of its former self, I emailed my cancellation this morning, stating that I could no longer abide their support for Scott Walker.
Hey teachers, I know a lot of us are addicted to newsprint, but maybe it's time to kick the habit of supporting newspapers that support candidates and issues that actively work against our interests and the interests of the children we teach.
Now where is that puzzle book I bought yesterday...
