This is my story, and I'm sticking with it.
My grandson honoured me with a brief visit today. It is spring break, and I remember what it is like to have better things to do. It was a perfect time to ask all those grandmotherly questions. You know like, what's the grade point average, have you decided on a career while striving to become an artist?
Instead of putting the above questions on the front burner, I started on common ground. "What the hell happened to UNIX? Windows 7 is just not cutting it for me." (I've dated myself, as those in the know will know)
Just like the "Cat in the Hat", grandson tells me LINUX has replaced UNIX. He whips out his lab tap and some USB thingey quick as your please. I recoil, the words escape my mouth sans thought. Grandson, do you recall how many times you infected, crashed and otherwise wreaked havoc on Nana's PC.
He responds, "Do you want me to fix it, do you trust me?" In an instant the reply is on my lips. Hey, what do I have to lose. I can either buy an Apple, dumping MS in the hope of a better result, or I can try something different, yet very familiar. Go for it, I say. He insists on a fail safe backup of a Windows 7 option, if I'm not pleased.
While he works his magic, he asks, have you ever watched the TV series "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia"? What channel is it on? He tells me it is an old series on FX. FOX, you're kidding me? Nana, Faux News' Rupert Murdoch plays both sides of the game. (Wow, grandson has really matured, this is worth investigation.)
Being a Nana gives me certain privileges. In order to demonstrate that I can multi-task, I ask him about WikiLeaks, and Anonymous while my PC zips through his commands, and the video is playing on his laptop.
Grandson has never heard of anyone named Barrett Brown. He says Anonymous is not controlled by anyone. He says they are more interested in being pranksters than hackers. Grandson thinks I've fallen for a load of propaganda.
I'll close, back to the intro, DK4 with Firefox and Linux is running through the forest on the wind. The only delay seems to be "ping.chartbeat.net". What is it?
