Came across this on Jezebel:
A local businesswoman has upset her neighbors by opening a new burger join in town— and naming it Fat Ho Burgers.
Menu items (.pdf warning!) include such interestingly named items such as the "Supa Fly Ho with Cheese", the "Sloppy Ho Brisket" and even "Little Ho" meals for kids.
I'm not really sure what to think about all this, especially after reading about the owner:
Complicating matters a bit is the fact that the restaurant is owned by a young, black woman who said she worked her way through college to open the restaurant. Twenty-three year-old Lakita Evans told a local Fox affiliate, "It's not calling people a ho. It's just like they say, 'Oooh that ho is big,' or, 'That ho is tight!'" She added, "Look what's going on in Japan. It's like clear this world is not gonna get any better. Why cry and be depressed? The economy is bad. Somebody gotta keep a sense of humor around here."
But Fat Ho Burgers is located really close to a Christian cafe, and they don't seem to be too happy about the vulgarity nearby:
One of Fat Ho Burgers’ closest neighbors is the Gospel Café. Folks at the volunteer-run religious café and bookstore wish the burger joint was a little more “holy.”
“Would’ve been nice to think a little more sensitively,” said Pastor Marsha Martie.
So is this racist? Is it misogynist? Who knows. But the controversy has been good for Fat Ho's business:
Business was so good Wednesday at Waco’s Fat Ho Burgers that the cash-only business first ran out of cash and then used up its supply of beef.
Lunch-hour diners waited in line for 30 minutes or longer Wednesday and for most the attraction was the new restaurant’s provocative name.
