The Dane Country Farmers' Market will be starting up soon (April 16 and every Saturday thereafter throughout the summer). It bills itself as the largest Farmers' Market in the country. It's pretty much the same sort of thing as one would expect from any sort of outdoor farmers' market around the country- local farmers can set up vender stalls, and then city dwellers get to buy direct from farmers bypassing the middleman of the grocery store and transportation network, the food is all locally grown, etc. All fairly standard stuff.
But here's what makes the Dane County Famers' Market interesting: It's located right on the Capitol Square in Madison Wisconsin - the site of all the protesting that was going on recently.
I've been wondering how the character of the market might be different this year with all the political events going on in Wisconsin, and I was wondering how the market could be leveraged to help keep the awareness up of the Scott Walker issues, but in a way that doesn't detract from the core purpose of the market.
Any suggestions?
One thing about the Farmer's Market is that in the past it was often used as a nice couple of hours outside for the family. You walk around and get some groceries, but also as long as you're there you also take a stroll through the capitol and have a look around. With the new "security" measures that won't be the same anymore.
