I've found that a lot of people have not been able to keep up with political happenings in Concord these days. "So what's been going on?" they ask me. Seth and I have done our best to fit the Cliff's Notes version here into a musical package just shy of 6 minutes long.
The Circus is Coming To Old Concord Town

The circus is coming - oh look! you can see!
Here come the elephants drinking their tea,
The circus is coming to old Concord town
Come and we’ll watch the state government drown!
With guns in the state house - they’ll let children carry
and have such fun, repealing the freedom to marry
dismantle the unions, vote in “right to work”
our state’s middle class has now truly been Kurked!
My mother does not really need Medicaid
And our children’s teachers don’t need to be paid
We won’t need so many police on the beat
When every citizen packs concealed heat!
(refrain)
So many professions no licenses need
From federal law we think we can secede
Our new state militia is just what we want
To repel the invaders who come from Vermont
Our state’s infrastructure is starting to crumble
The weight of these elephants cause it to rumble
with all social services closing their doors
the churches are told to take care of the poor
(refrain)
Jack he is Kimball and Jack he is quick
Koch money makes Teflon, so nothing can stick
Jack thanks Craig Benson and Free Staters all
Who heard Grover Norquist and answered his call
Their plan is to starve federal government down
Until in a bathtub they cause it to drown
The bathtub is full at this moment I think
So our state government they would drown in the sink
(refrain)
The most treacherous high wire act ever seen
to balance the budget, they madly careen
cutting and slashing, and cutting some more
Just shreds of democracy left on the floor
I fear that this budget is starving our state
And making divisions and hardship and hate
I wrote to my rep: don’t leave us in the lurch!
He wrote back: “We’ve made the state tree the John Birch!”
(refrain)
The statehouse is now these big boys’ private fort
Majority leader DJ Bettencourt
Says of Bishop McCormack, he pimps pedophiles
While Speaker O’Brien he looks on and smiles
Our new representatives’ comments are rude
They ignore us, insult us with their attitude
Public hearings are ended before they begin
The public is troublesome, don’t let them in
(refrain)
In his rockpile, the Old Man is surely in spin
To see what a mess his beloved state’s in
We can’t reassemble the fallen stone face
But we can start now on the 2012 race
Should food stamp recipients be tested for drugs?
Are all public employees no better than thugs?
We’ve no one to blame for this mess but ourselves
Let’s make sure we choose better in 2012!
The circus is here - oh look! you can see!
They’re pouring us tea now - oh thanks, none for me-
We cannot just watch our state government drown.
It’s time to bring sanity to Concord town.
