Here in SE Michigan, we've been watching the emergency trial since about 8 am this morning. There has been a jury selected to make this decision about whether and/or where this Florida pastor will be allowed to carry out his 5 pm protest at the Islamic Center of America in Dearbon.
The city seems to be offering another venue for free for his protest....but the pastor is insisting on demonstrating on the narrow strip of public land between the mosque parking lot (private property) and the access road to the Southfield Freeway. The police and city officials say this is not safe - many cars will have to slow down or stop to avoid all the expected protesters and counter-protesters. Also, there are several churches, schools, a senior citizen center and a synagogue within a 2 block area of this site. The mayor has said there must be a bond of at least $50,000 if they choose to demonstrate in front of the mosque.
And to further complicate matters, last night as the pastor entered a vehicle at the airport, his gun went off and put a hole in the floor of the car. The police are very concerned that the man has little or no control of his weapon. There have also been over 400 death threats against him from all over - not just here in Michigan. Police are extremely concerned that extremists on both sides of this issue may spiral out of control in this small area causing all kinds of public safey problems.
During the court proceedings today, both the pastor and his "assistant" (the guy who actually burned the Koran in Florida) have shown up in t-shirts in jeans and are representing themselves. You know the old saying...... I find it strange that last evening they were wearing suits and ties but in court they are wearing "biker gear." Anyway, the prosecution has shown the video of the Koran burning, and they have admitted to the deed. They have been asked pointed questions about what their intentions are. They have been told that there is another safter sight to express their opinions where they would not be trespassing on private property nor causing traffic or public safety problems. They will be ticketed and asked to leave if they show up and if they refuse to leave, they will be arrested. Jones is insisting that he will be in front of the Islamic Center at 5.
By the way, all the community religious leaders have asked their members to stay away from the conflict and not get involved in any counter-protests. They are all expressing the teachings of peace and brotherhood on this holy day.
I'm kinda hoping the judge and jury deliberate a long time on this one. What do you think? I'll update as more information becomes available.
