I was a full supporter of the President in his 2008 run, maxed out donations in the primary and general elections. I've been getting the full range of inducements to support the president, join the "Presidential Steering Committee," become a "Democratic Leader," etc., (all it takes is paying your money).
Well I've sent back notes to all these (as well as letting the callers know) stating that once the President starts addressing the issues I care about, in a way that I recognize as advancing the country, like he did in the campaign, then I'll open my wallet again, but not before.
It seems that my voice isn't the only one. The volunteer I just got of the phone with wasn't the happy, energetic, upbeat voice I've come to expect from such calls. It was a tired, almost apologetic, request for support. He sounded beaten down.
I hope that the campaign and administration is tracking their success, or lack thereof. Maybe they'll realize that governing for the benefit of the Republican base isn't helping fire up his true base.
I'll vote for him, I'll probably eventually donate to him, I just have no reason, at this point, to feel excited about helping to continue wars in Southwest Asia (and now North Africa), reduce food assistance to the needy, cut healthcare assistance, let Wall Street off the hook, and continue to preside over ongoing assaults to US civil liberties. All the while buying into Republican talking points about "spending problems."
