In what has turned into what will be one of Canada's most historic elections in recent memory, The New Democratic Party of Canada is poised to become the next government of Canada.
Whether it is a minority government or a coalition government formed with the Liberal party of Canada, it appears Jack Layton is beating all odds at possibly becoming the first Prime Minister from a party who has never even become the official opposition in parliament.
As can be seen in this collection of polls (courtesy of the CBC), the NDP have a huge amount of momentum going into Monday's election. It is no longer a question of whether the NDP will become the official opposition in the first time in Canadian history. This is now already accepted by most of the media. It is now a question of whether Jack Layton will lead the party to power. Most people would have laughed at that notion merely one month ago.
The party, who's brand colour is a "Daily Kos" orange, first made everyone in the media wake up when it was evident that the entire province of Quebec was turning away from the tired old separatist politics of the Bloc Quebecois. Quebec, as poll after poll showed, was ready for change. And the NDP -- who share similar socio-economic policies (center-left) are the ones most in Quebec are ready to hand the reins to. This "federalist" shift is nothing short of staggering and it has placed the NDP in top spot in Quebec for the first time ever in Canada's history. Jack Layton -- who has always been considered the best leader of all 3 parties -- is now being given the chance to see what "change" he can provide.
This giant wave of orange has not been contained behind the walls of La Belle Province, either. The NDP is gaining strength everywhere in Canada -- even in a skeptical Ontario (the province with the most seats in the House of Commons).
So heads up Daily Kos!
All indications are that "Socialist" Canada is poised to become even more "socialist". It's notable that advanced voting last week has shown a 37% increase in voter turrnout. The youth vote is also expected to be historic in numbers. This all favours the NDP. History is being made in a possible huge come-from-behind win for the NDP and Jack Layton -- our next Prime Minister of Canada.
