It had been a very bad day and it wasn't over yet
the door could still open and he'd be there again
she counted each second till it would be time for the train
to come and take her away please please let it come in time
the mournful wail pierced the night, 10 pm, right on time
she gathered herself and at just the right moment, she
flung her soul out the window and off it went, clickety
clack down the rails to Wherever
sometimes Wherever scared her with strange beings
strange sights and sounds and smells
but most often Wherever was a warm and wonderful place
once there was a surprise party just for her
full of people who loved her very much
another time Wherever was a place without any people
only soft and gentle little creatures gathered
around her to keep her warm
then there was the carnival where she got
to ride the tilt-a-whirl as many times as she wished
and eat as many cones of cotton candy as she wanted
and when she got tired, there was always her Wherever house,
and her Wherever Mommy and Daddy who were always waiting
always happy, never mad or sad, to tuck her in, kiss her cheek
and tell her she was the best little girl
in the whole wide world

the old woman sits smiling as another train goes by
such busy tracks so close to her fifth floor window
one train after another, every single day, endless
opportunities for new adventures and travel to
parts unknown, unexplored, fascinating places
there had never been time to visit, she
happily flings her soul out the window almost every day
no longer confined by body or even by dimension
eager to see the next Wherever
