The Daily Bucket is a place to catch your casual observations of the natural world and turn them into a valuable resource. Whether it's the first flowers of spring or that odd bug in your basement, don't be afraid to toss your thoughts into the bucket. Check here for a more complete description.
So, yesterday I got a brushback from Ol' Ma Nature. The day started innocently enough, I did some odds and ends and then got ready to start assembling one of my tree boxes for the yard. These are cumbersome enough that I need to do this part in the driveway, so I open the door and step out.
I am nearly blown off of my feet by a cacaphony of Chickadees blasting by at just above head level and nearly swerving into the garage before hooking back out and then around the corner of the house and into the back yard. Several of the little bandits, peeling off in all directions to check out the day and try their new found freedom. Exuberant little balls of newly fledged fluff gleefully exercising their birthright.
Later I see signs that at least one is still in the nest box, but May 14-15 is Castro Valley, CA Chickadee fledge date.
Yesterday's cheery scene turned rainy by nightfall, and rained all night, and still off and on today; so the little bandits are staying indoors huddled for warmth. When we get momentary bursts of sun, the yard fills with an assortment of birds only to empty a short while later as the rain starts to fall again.
