Great news:
Two months ago, we learned that Senator Daniel Akaka will be retiring from the U.S. Senate at the end of his term next year, after more than three decades of distinguished public service. I know you join me in thanking Senator Akaka for everything he has done for the people of Hawaii and wishing him and his wife, Millie, the very best.
Since then, I've heard from so many people across our great state — and longtime supporters like you — encouraging me to run for his open seat.
Thoughts and well-wishes have come from every island: I'm humbled and inspired by the support I've received from Hawaii families.
So inspired that today, I am announcing my candidacy for United States Senate. We've fought some tough fights together in Congress. And, together, we'll keep fighting for Hawaii in the U.S. Senate.
You can check out Hirono's welcome video as well:
And her new site is already up. This is an exciting development for progressives, who now have a real champion they can get behind in this race. I suspect this means that Hirono's fellow House member, Colleen Hanabusa, won't be getting into the race, though other entrants (like former Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann) are possible. Two recent polls showed Hirono crushing any potential Republican opposition, and with the highest favorability ratings among members of her own party, she's in the pole position in the Democratic primary.
This move also will set off a big chain-reaction to fill Hirono's 2nd district seat. The list of names likely to express interest here will be long, and it's even possible that Hanabusa herself could switch over here, since she's actually from HI-02. Needless to say, we'll keep a close watch on any developments.
