Today is POST YOUR FAVORITE SUNRISE MUSIC DAY. What does that mean? What do you think it means? You tell me, because I'm out of ideas, right now, but, hell, it sounded better than saying I showed up late for class and the dog ate my homework, which may be closer to the truth, but I would never admit it.
So what just the hell do I mean? I don't know! But it could mean something like this.
Daphnis et Chloe Suite by Maurice Ravel, Orchestre National de Lille, Jean-Claude Casadesus, conductor
Okay, that was an easy one, because that particular piece is labeled "Daybreak." Too easy. If we want to be interpretive, though, couldn't we call this Sunrise music?
Beethoven Symphony #7, Introduction Poco Sostenuto, Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Herbert von Karajan
I've always thought that had a "Sunrise" element to it.
How about this one?
Les Preludes, by Franz Liszt, AIMS Festival Orchestra, Edoardo Muller
One more, this time by Mozart. Pablo Casals, by the way, is one of my favorite conductors, when he chooses to conduct rather than play the cello.
Mozart Symphony #38, first movement, conducted by Pablo Casals, Casals Festival Orchestra of Puerto Rico
That's all I'm going to do. I left some more low-hanging fruit out there, and I'm hoping you'll pick them up and post them. Like, wasn't there something by Grieg?
Please, entertain me, entertain us all, post some music that you think resonates with your conception of a sunrise, no matter the title.
Next week: Better than this week!
