Redistricting is one of the most heated, contentious, divisive pieces of legislation that a state legislature will face. NY's Senate is one of the most dysfunctional, contentious, and divisive governmental bodies in the country (remember the "gang of four" attempted coup in 2009? How about the 4 senators who caucus as "Independent Democrats"?). This should be fun.
Thanks to Mark Grisanti's 2010 upset win in a 77% Obama district, Republicans gained control of the NY Senate and ultimately, a seat at the redistricting table. The thanks he will receive...getting cut out of his Senate seat. Due to population shifts, Western NY MUST lose a Senate seat during redistricting. Downstate will gain this seat; in this map I place it in midtown Manhattan.
The contentious part of redistricting will concern what Republicans are going to get in return for losing a seat. However, at 77% Obama, Democrats must think that this is "their" seat that is only going to be occupied by a Republican until 2012. This is where the contention comes in, especially with control of the Senate hanging in the balance. He's my take on what could happen...
Long Island
Republicans hold all 9 Long Island seats despite the fact that all but one was won by Obama in 2008. Not all that much to talk about here; I tried to maintain the status quo and keep all Senators in their districts.

Another place there isn't much to talk about. All districts are Democratic, with each one being at least 60% Obama. The most interesting thing here is that I turned SD-16 into a true Asian majority district.

Brooklyn/Staten Island
This is where things start to get interesting. Republicans have two seats here, while Democrats control eight. However, SD-27 is occupied by the currently-under-indictment Dem Carl Kruger (also a member of the "Gang of Four" who tried a coup attempt after Democrats gained control of the NY Senate in 2008). As is, the district is 55% McCain. I believe that NY Republicans will lobby for a Republican seat here in exchange for losing Mark Grisanti in Buffalo.

The biggest news here is that midtown Manhattan gets a new seat, the 60th from Buffalo. Otherwise, every seat here is safer than safe Democratic.

Here's where the big change occurred. Mark Grisanti's Buffalo-based SD-60 gets absorbed by SD-58, SD-61, and SD-62. A lot of rearranging here to make everything fit.
