I've often read that "the left stayed home" in the 2010 elections and that's what caused the Republican gains. The problem with that is that we voted! But the Independents that had voted Democratic in 2006 and 2008 switched to the other side.
Now a Gallup Poll has some disturbing news that fits into the theme. I should say that I don't really trust Gallup....more below
Gallup likes to make sure that its sample matches certain demographic criteria but political orientation isn't one of them. This means they might have too many Democrats in one survey, too many Republicans in another. They don't care! They think it's legitimate and so do all the news outlets that run stories about the Gallup surveys.
But let's say, for argument's sake, that this latest is valid. Here's the link:

It says that in a matchup of President Obama vs a generic Republican candidate, the Gooper would be ahead, as of today, by a 47%-39% count, with the rest undecided.
That's not so good. When you look at it by political affiliation you can see the Republicans solidly back a Republican by 88-4 and the Democrats back President Obama 81-8.
The Independents now favor a Republican by a 10 point margin, 44-34 with 22% undecided.
If any of you are inclined to yell at fellow Democrats for not being appreciative enough of what President Obama has accomplished or has been trying to accomplish, I suggest you go find those Independent voters and talk to them instead.
Mathematically speaking, the President needs more Democratic votes. 81% won't cut it. But he really needs to sell himself to those indies. And those of you who love the President need to be figuring out right now how you're going to help him do that.
