Last night I posted a story about a lesbian couple in Vermont who's suing an inn for refusing to host their wedding reception.
What I didn't expect to see in the comments was this:
But lets say you own a resort in PN - you aren't really comfortable with gay marriage but when it comes up for a vote in the legislature, you take a live-and-let-live attitude to it because it won't bother you. Only then you learn that if it passes, you will be obligated to host a gay marriage at your resort even if it makes you uncomfortable and hurts your image as catering to fundamentalist christian tourists. Then you get on the phone and tell your state rep no WAY to vote for this.
or this:
his just reinforces the fears of those who think gays and lesbians will eventually want to force churches to perform gay weddings.
Oh. My. GOD!
People who don't like same sex marriage might... not like same sex marriage! They might even... ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO VOTE AGAINST IT?
We really need to stop pushing for our rights immediately, if we're going to avoid this onslaught of people who don't want us to have our rights.
Seriously, I can't believe that I need to write this, because to me it's an incredibly simple concept. If this were a mixed race couple, there would be no question at all about the usefulness or validity of the lawsuit. No one would be quivering in their boots worried about the impression it would create.
But because it's a lesbian couple, people are claiming that it's... what? Unseemly to expect their rights to be respected?
Seriously-- with allies like this, who needs opponents of same sex marriage.
Hey, everyone, let's go all hide over here so we don't offend anyone!
