If you're as mad as hell and looking for a way to get your voice heard by your congresscritter or Senator, I suggest faxing them. Email is fine - but I have the feeling there may be more than a few luddites in the Congress who don't believe it if it's not on paper.
And if the rumor (sorry, no link) I'm hearing is true, "they" are saying the the phone calls and faxes coming in are split 50/50 in pro and con. We need our voices heard in a big way.
First, find your representative's contact information here.
Next, compose a well-thought-out letter detailing your position. I'd love to say "be respectful" but I'm mad as hell and had to edit a few times before I felt okay about the tone.
To send a fax for free go to FaxZero. All you need to enter is your name and email address or fax number; then the name and fax number of your Senator or Rep. Upload your letter as a Word, pdf, or Doc file, type in a confirmation code, and hit send.
This service will allow you to send two free faxes per day. That means you can fax both your Senator and your Rep Every Goddamn Day Until This Farce Ends.
Here's what I wrote to Senator Bill Nelson(D) of Florida:
The Honorable Bill Nelson,
United States Senator
Re: Debt Limit Negotiations
Dear Senator Nelson:
Stop. Just stop. What I want, as a lifelong Democrat, is to stop the insanity of these debt crisis negotiations -- and for cooler heads to prevail long enough to pass the customary one-sentence bill that has been pro-forma for the past 4 Presidential administrations.
When the House passes whatever nonsense it passes, and it comes to you, please hollow it out, insert a one-sentence “raise the debt limit” bill, and pass a clean bill.
Then if the “children” throwing a tantrum in the Tea Party-controlled House want to negotiate or have hearings about reducing the debt, fine.
But holding the country hostage is wrong. People’s lives are at stake. People’s assets are at stake. The soul of the country is at stake. And those who have made a pledge to uphold some think-tank’s platform over and above upholding the Constitution verge on treason.
I weep with frustration and shame at how this President is being treated by supposed “patriotic Americans.” I ache from the name-calling, the insults, the disrespect. Whatever happened to respect for the Office? I may not agree with all his policies or methods, but the Office is deserving of my respect.
I want the ugliness to stop, and for the sane among the House and the Senate to take a stand for a clean debt bill.
Thank you for your service to the United States.
Respectfully,
It's not much - but as a floating expat living in Mexico it's the best I can do. My pledge is to fax Bill Nelson and Rep. Corrine Brown every day - and urge all of us to do the same.
I'm sick and tired of clenching my fists at these jerks.
