Below is a Face Book post by a high school classmate of mine:
"Entitlement my butt! Older Americans paid into Social Security with every pay-check. Their benefits aren't some kind of charity or handout! Congressional benefits - free health care, outrageous retirement packages, 67 paid holidays, three weeks paid vacation, unlimited paid sick days - now THAT'S welfare. And Congress has the nerve to call Social Security and Medicare, entitlements? Re-post if you are sick of their crap, and ashamed of our 'leaders.' Keep It Going!"
Funny thing is that she is a Republican, conservative, and some of her other posts show a dislike for our current president. She likes the "George W. Bush" and "Impeach Obama" pages on Face Book.
I am 53, and she would be the same plus or minus a year. We're both approaching retirement age. Scrolling through her older posts, she talks about her battle with cancer over the past one plus years. My prayers are with her.
Don't leave disparaging remarks about her. Don't get on her case about healthcare.
So, what's my point in writing this?
There are some Republicans out there who "get it" about Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and healthcare. There are some that get that we've been paying for these since our very first pay checks.
These are the people that we must seek out and build a coalition with. That's how we protect what we've all been paying for since our very first pay checks.
