Dear Congressperson:
I have received your latest letter requesting a donation to the DNC. I have read your letter carefully. And I have a few comments on the points you present.
By my recollection it was President Obama that put Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid on the table without specifying the details. As a result we are now faced with the fact that a Democratic President is the one that started the dismantling of these systems. It is this Democratic President that gave relief to the Republicans supporting the Ryan budget.
I seem to remember that it was President Obama that agreed to renew the Bush tax cuts and who signed the extension into law. As a result the Deficit has skyrocketed. And this, in turn, has allowed the Republicans to get the upper hand by making deficit reduction NOT JOBS, the highest priority.
The country is faced with an unemployment rate that is in the middle teens. Other than some comments here and there, President Obama has not proposed a single new piece of legislation to address the problem. And I don’t want to hear that it doesn’t make any difference because the bad old republicans would never let it pass. He gave them a gift. They didn’t have to turn anything down and look like fools because he never sent the legislation to congress.
The Debt Ceiling. What can I say? Apparently the man does not have the ability to say “NO!” Maybe he thinks the Republicans are going to change and play fair, next time. I don’t know what his problem is, but rolling over for the tea party is not going to get him anything except more blackmail. I don’t like my country being blackmailed. I spent a year in South East Asia because this country does not roll over and give in to force (see Iraq and Afghanistan). Now he has set a new precedent. It’s kind of like Teddy Roosevelt’s “Speak softly and carry a big stick.” Except it’s in reverse.
You mention Wall Street. Where is the President’s Justice Department? Given what has happened in the financial sector over the last several years how come there hasn’t been a single trial. Oh, yeah, we don’t want to look backwards; we want to look forward. Well then, how come the White House is putting pressure on the New York AG to agree to a settlement that the AG (and several from other states) do not think is fair to the taxpayers.
I’m sorry but I can’t bring myself to including a check. Don’t worry I will most assuredly vote for President Obama but I’ll save my money for Democratic House members so that we can take back the House. Perhaps, if the President starts fighting for the great dreams he keeps talking about I will change my mind. But it is up to him.
Sincerely,
Harvey K. Orens
