I asked last week if anyone was headed to Rep. Bass' townhall meeting in New Hampshire and judging by the reports from a quasi-journalistic outlet, people turned out in force! Either folks in New Hampshire and Texas have formed a new unity or, I sense a trend possibly developing. Rep. Pete Olson (R-TX) encountered hundreds of dissatisfied constituents eager to pick apart his proposal to 'cut, cut, cut!' in order to create jobs and repair our broken economy.
There are few things more refreshing than to see a direct contradiction of the bullshit offered up by a Congressman made by a real-life constituent of the district. Bravo to Mr. Halverson for showing a direct example of jobs that were retained by stimulus money. And a huge round of applause to everyone that showed up and drove Rep. Olson off script and into the real world of the problems that affect his district.
Through the wall-to-wall coverage of Tropical Storm Irene, I've seen little coverage of these town halls and the questions being raised to our representatives. Hopefully the passing of the storm will leave the media with plenty of space to cover the activists taking their stories to their representatives. Sure, these people aren't telegenic baffoons slinging racial epithets in place of logical arguments, but just maybe they'll break through the media clutter. That, or CNN, et. al. could give us an update on that revolution happening in Libya . . .
