Eric Cantor (R-Austerity) has told us young'ns that we should expect to get screwed in our old age, and in fact should plan for it. He says this will happen because he and his Congress are unwilling to increase taxes.
He's coming right out and saying this. Smugly, I imagine. But we can wipe that smug grin off his face. Here are some slogans and whatever we can use:
"I plan on a good retirement, so plan on yours soon." Or we can say "If you plan on a good retirement, plan on theirs soon"
"The Club for Growth- Only Top Two Percent Admitted."
"Republican Party - Good at low taxes and nothing else"
"GOP - Done with the economy, now holding the Golden Years hostage."
"Eric Cantor- You'll have ample time to arrange your new position at a lobbying firm"
"Eric Cantor- Sorry, too busy rewarding rich for getting richer to help you."
"Eric Cantor- Math not looking good for us? Then it doesn't look good for you!"
So on and so forth. The emphasis should be on him being a smug douchebag who doesn't give a crap what "planning" for the absence of medicare and other things will mean.
The emphasis should be on this being a promise, and that promise being more sacred than Eric Cantor's wish to preserve the tax cuts for his friends.
We should bring up hostage taking and economic terrorism, but we should be subtle enough about it that it doesn't come across as clumsy.
I think we have to appeal to people's interests, and not just what they expect. Many people expect the major entitlements to be short for them. But why? Mainly because of years of experiencing the Republicans trying to fuck with them.
But if you ask people, do you want this in your old age? They'll mostly say yes. That's the motivation you want to appeal to. Rather than appeal to fear that might stifle the will to fight back as well as motivate it, just go for pure motivation: if you want to keep your Medicare, Social Security and other benefits, you need the Democrats in charge.
And for those who are going to complain about what modern Democrats do? Well, folks, as undependable as they may sometimes be, if it looks like the electricity is just arcing off that third rail, they're going to be less likely to step on it. Got it?
Let's get to work.
