Welcome! "What's Happenin'?" is a casual community diary (a daily series, 8:30 AM Eastern on weekdays, 10 AM on weekends and holidays) where you can hang out, talk about what is going on with you, listen to music, talk about the news and the goings on here and everywhere.
Maybe you have seen some news stories that you think are not receiving enough attention and you'd like to post links to them. Maybe you'd like to just chat among friends about your life, your health, your family or social circle, your pets, etc. You can also post links to your own writings here on dkos or elsewhere. Perhaps you want to share some pictures or music or links to other things. This is your kind of place to talk about what's happening.
Just about anything goes, but attacks and pie fights are not welcome here. If that is what you want, find another place to do it. This is a community diary and a friendly, peaceful, supportive place for people to interact. This diary series is produced by the TeamDFH group but anyone who wants to join in peaceful interaction is welcome.

Sonnet LXVI
William Shakespeare
Tired with all these, for restful death I cry,
As to behold desert a beggar born,
And needy nothing trimm'd in jollity,
And purest faith unhappily forsworn,
And gilded honour shamefully misplaced,
And maiden virtue rudely strumpeted,
And right perfection wrongfully disgraced,
And strength by limping sway disabled
And art made tongue-tied by authority,
And folly, doctor-like, controlling skill,
And simple truth miscalled simplicity,
And captive good attending captain ill:
Tired with all these, from these would I be gone,
Save that, to die, I leave my love alone.

Humor & Satire| The Vassar dictionary: uncensored, for real
We're getting into the swing of the academic year, dear reader. Perhaps you're returning for your second, third or fourth year, in which case you don't need my help, and should stop reading immediately in order to go find your hookups from last year and see if they're still into playing NCAA Division III tonsil-hockey with you. If you're a freshman, however, you're probably lost and doe-eyed, and for many of you those eyes will before long be obscured behind prescriptionless American Apparel black plastic frames as you settle into Vassar culture. Until then, allow me to present my supplement to the annual Misc feature "Meet Vassar College"

Racism, hate continue to plague society
America has fallen into a deep moral decay that isn't likely to get better anytime soon. Any doubts about that statement were obliterated on Sunday, June 26, when two carloads of white teenagers drove to Jackson, Miss., on a mission of hate.
The goal of these soulless thugs was to find and hurt a black person. Unfortunately, the teens found James Craig Anderson, a 49-year-old man, who was standing in a parking lot, near his car. The teens allegedly beat Anderson repeatedly and yelled racial epithets, including "White Power," according to several witnesses.

Palestinians head for UN state showdown
Not for the first time this year, Israel finds itself a nervous spectator as tumultuous events in the region around it rapidly change the shape and nature of the Middle East.
The domino-like fall of authoritarian regimes in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya, not forgetting the violent turmoil in Syria, caught almost everyone by surprise and, arguably, left Israeli politicians floundering for a coherent policy response.

Daley’s lawyers ask judge to drop him from police torture suit
Lawyers representing former Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley are asking a federal judge to reconsider her ruling that made him part of a civil case against convicted former police Cmdr. Jon Burge, saying the judge “mistakenly” considered Daley’s past role as Cook County state’s attorney.

Antipsychotics: Nursing homes rethink use of drugs
Day after day, Hazel Eng sat on her couch, a blank stare on her face. The powerful antipsychotics she was taking often cloaked her in sedation. And when they didn't, the 89-year-old lashed out at her nursing home's aides with such anger and frequency her daughter wondered if her mother would be better off dead.
Until, in a matter of days, everything seemed to change.

Please carefully consider information like this before you decide to donate your money to any charity:
10 Highly Paid CEOs at Low-Rated Charities
For charities to be successful, they need talented, experienced leaders. Those leaders command significant salaries. But CEOs who command high salaries should also get the most out of the organizations they lead. The leaders of these 10 organizations are taking high salaries at the expense of spending dollars on the charity's programs. Despite receiving more than $240,000 in annual pay, these CEOs run organizations that devote less than 60% of their budgets to their programs and services. That means that at least 40% of your dollars are going to such costs as fundraising and administration, including the salary of the CEO.
