Today, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie nominated Chatham Borough Mayor Bruce A. Harris, an openly gay African American and Executive Assistant Attorney General Philip Kwon, a Korean American, to fill two open seats on the New Jersey Supreme Court. Neither has ever served as a judge before. Notwithstanding that fact, both are expected to be easily confirmed. Both sides of the aisle are praising these nominations.
If confirmed, Mayor Harris, a Republican, would be the just the third African American and the first openly gay New Jersey Supreme Court justice.
Assistant Attorney General Kwon, an Independent, would be the first Asian American to sit on the New Jersey Supreme Court.
