Update: There is a diary out there of someone saying he voted for Santorum to cause havoc in the GOP primaries and perhaps because he thinks Santorum will lose against Obama. I think the opposite. Santorum, the candidate, could energize conservative voters and make it a very close election in November.
Bill Maher was interviewed yesterday by Piers Morgan at CNN and he said something that I have been saying for a while here at Daily Kos and that seems to fall on deaf ears (I am paraphrasing Bill Maher): "The Liberals live in their own Liberal bubble."
Just check my signature line that I have been using for over a year now.
Bill Maher was telling Piers how he always gets approached by celebrites who happen to be on the liberal side of things and want to talk politics with him. These people are always flabbergasted at the statements of the GOPers, they see Santorum, Gingrich and Co as "crazies" and are surprised that anyone would agree with such "radical" ideas.
Well, Maher said, and I so agree with him, liberals, because they hang out with other liberals in the big cities, and only fly across America from one coast to the other, that they think such a thing as the large territories in the center of America do not exist, that nobody lives there (snark).
The truth of the matter and that may surprise many liberals is that there are many people that are happy to hear Santorum and Gingrich say the "crazy" things they say, because that is exactly how they think.
Maher warned liberals to not become to complacent and dismiss the GOP candiates as lunatics, because come the general elections it could be much closer than many think, and suddenly, the liberal bubble could burst and the situation become more painful than it was under GWB.
Piers mentioned Santorum's statement that Obama is a snob for expecting everybody to attend college and again, Maher's answer was that, many people think the same way. And I have to add, that in my liberal bubble vision of things, I believe that most people who support the GOP do not have a college education, which is why Santorum tells them, it's fine, you don't need one, we just need more mining and oil drilling jobs for you. And these people will be happy and clap and vote for him.
I think the biggest problem to solve in this country is how to reach people in the conservative towns of middle America, the Fox News people, how to get their thoughts to progress towards the 21st century (Definitely not by writing sarcastic comentary as I am doing here in some places). But if we ignore their existance, and we don't work towards that goal, we may have a Santorum as president in 2013.
