President Obama spoke out for the first time on Friday about the fatal shooting of an unarmed 17-year-old African-American boy named Trayvon Martin, calling it a "tragedy."
"If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon," Mr. Obama said from the White House Rose Garden.
The president said the incident makes him think of his own children. He said Martin's parents "are right to expect that all of us as Americans are gonna take this with the seriousness that it deserves, and we're going to get to the bottom of exactly what happened."
The statement came hours after
further protests in Sanford, FL.
“I think all of us have to do some soul searching to figure out how something like this happened,” Obama said, according to Time.com.
The soul-searching could extend to reviewing the Stand Your Ground law that has been misused as a defense of vigilantism. The co-author of the Stand Your Ground law has publicly
stated that George Zimmerman, murderer of 17 yo Martin, "has no protection under my law. This law is for law-abiding citizens. Zimmerman negated his immunity under the law by chasing Martin".
