So employers are now demanding access to job seakers' individual social media accounts. Will Americans continue to allow the miles the initial inches encouraged? They've been demanding for us to pee in cups; and permission to do background checks and credit scores for years now.
Years.
Blood. Hair. Genomes (they will. Eventually). We continue to hand over our lives and our power.
What do they do for us in return as we cede our precious freedom and privacy? Do they let us share in more of their profits? Do they set up a pension? Do they stand for fair and equal wages with collective bargaining rights?
And isn't it ironic that our Supreme Court is now deciding the fate of health care reform? That employer-supplied benefit could go "optional" for a lot more people with pre-existing conditions depending on the decision.
We're tired. Things seem a little brighter when the head stays buried; even though the reality is that it's dark and suffocating under all that sand.
How much more ground - that our predecessors fought for and claimed through our collective history since Caesar crossed the Rubicon - are we going to give to our corporate lords?
Any election under our current system will maybe slow it down. Maybe. However, as long as a huge American majority mostly ignores the outrageous Orwellian style infringements many corporations - with either government complicity or even involvement (telecommunication companies and federal Dept of Homeland security collusion just one example) pursue, we will continue to slide towards a for a future that will be set for generations of the new aristocracy; and downhill fast for the vast majority of us.
It's time to Occupy again (I'm sorry I left you). I made it to a few rallies and then got busy. Some initial cold and rain kept me away after a beautiful autumn as I hunkered down for another cold and miserable winter that mostly never arrived (fracking keeps it warm and fuzzy outside).
Who's with me?
