At least 20% of all pregnancies end in a spontaneous miscarriage. For believers of many faiths, this spontaneous abortion occurs at the will of some deity. For shorthand, let's call her/him a God. This God, the most abstract concept in the history of abstract concepts, has the believer's permission to create and destroy life. This God, a being nobody can agree on, not even people of the same faith, has the power to cause a pregnancy and end one at will. This God, this perfect spirit, gets to choose which pregnancies come to term and which don't.
But a woman, a tangible, living, breathing, definitely existing being cannot determine her own fate. A woman, a known quantity with an undebatable history needing no translation or interpretation, cannot end her own pregnancy. A woman, with dependents and livelihoods, desires and flesh, cannot choose an abortion without being called a murderer. Do be clear. When believers call abortion murder they are calling every woman who has ever had one a murder. A murderer. For doing what you allow your deity to do at will.
Let's get specific for a minute. Christians, I'm talking to you. I've read your Bible and I took notes in the margins. Things like, "disgusting," "brutal," "sick," WHAT???" Frankly, I think your God is kind of mean. Have you read the Old Testament, that guy did things I would never think to do. Some really depraved stuff. Stuff that nowadays would get your ass thrown in jail. Unless you are rich and white. Or, in Florida, just whitish.
So, your God, this creator that slaughtered thousands of innocents, gets to decide what a woman does with her pregnancy but this woman, this teacher who volunteers on weekends at the local pit bull rescue, or this lawyer who works for free to help the wrongly convicted, or this surgeon who donates her time fixing the faces of battered wives, or this mother of 2 who knows her limits, this woman who has done nothing but brought goodness and light to a dark world, doesn't get to decide what happens to her own body?
Your God is a questionable moral barometer with some serious misogynistic tendencies. If the PR is true, his son was a much cooler dude, but he was still a dude working for the man. Or is the man. And a ghost too, I guess. But you can't wipe out whole communities and expect the world to forgive you just because your son hangs out with prostitutes. Nor can you expect the non-believers, different-believers, and confused people to give a deity with such questionable judgment and disreputable history a free pass to decide their fate and determine their laws.
It's simple math really. If you add up all the willful murders in the Bible and all of the spontaneous miscarriages over the course of human existence, and compare that number to how many elective abortions a woman will have in her lifetime, God is going to have that woman beat by about a billion to 1. Maybe a billion to 2 or to 5 even. Regardless, if anyone is going to hell for murder, I vote we start with the serial killer. May I also suggest that we stop looking to that serial killer for wisdom and instead listen to the wisdom of the women who actually know what is best for their lives. The women who, unlike your deity, are undeniably in existence.
