Tens of thousands of Wisconsinites, or one big special interest? (Darren Hauck/Reuters)
Wisconsin Lieutenant Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch, facing recall alongside Gov. Scott Walker, has a dire warning:
“We cannot allow one big special interest to takeover our government and that’s what we are looking at. That is what is at stake in these recall elections,” she said on “Fox & Friends.”
Oh, the horror! Just when Kleefisch and Walker thought they'd successfully engineered
a corporate takeover of Wisconsin, the state faces a possible "takeover" by "one big special interest"—hundreds of thousands of working people who happen to belong to unions. Well, and, sure, there are a whole lot more
women whose rights have been rolled back by Walker. And, yes,
Wisconsin has lost jobs under Walker even as employment was rising in neighboring states. In fact, it's almost like the assault on public employee unions was just the beginning of a much broader assault on working people and their families. That's not a fact conducive to winning a recall election, though, so expect to keep hearing about "one big special interest," as if the recall was only about unions and as if Walker and Kleefisch were outgunned, rather than afloat on a tide of corporate cash.
