It sets my eye to twitching a little when Random Stranger says to me something like "Giving Mom a break today, eh?" when he or she sees me wrangling my two boys at the store, at the used car dealership, in the library...
...cuz...ha ha...get this...I'm a dude and I have kids with me. Get it? Folks make their assumptions about my role as a father. And sometimes those assumptions make me wince.
I'm the father of two sweet little boys, now 8 and 4. I'm a man. And I've spent years of my life as a stay at home dad largely because of our financial circumstances and the cost of childcare. I've spent years to my life with tiny little boys orbiting around me and in tow wherever I go. I make their food. Get them washed and dressed and keep them from electrocuting themselves throughout the day...kiss ouchies.
I have been with my kids pretty much consistently since their infancies, providing care in a manner many might consider to be befitting of a mother. My wife has chosen to work outside the home. And ya know what? That's okay.
We're not wealthy folks...and yeah, we've struggled quite a bit over the past couple years. But ya know what? Our kids are doing okay.
Hell...they're doing better than okay.
Anyway...With this talk of the Women's Option to Raise Kids (WORK) Act........I guess I just want to put that out there. Perhaps such an act should be a little broader. A parent should have the option to raise kids.
