While we're not going to have to angst over the question of another season (season 3 of the show is already in production, and season 4 is pretty much a foregone conclusion after the ratings numbers that came back from the Royal Wedding episodes) we are going to have to put up with a long summer pony drought. This was hammered home over the weekend when I turned on the same Pony channel at the same Pony time, and saw no Pony.
For new fans, this isn't quite as much of an issue. If you haven't tapped season 2 yet, you're still in for some wonderful treats. Some of the best Cutie Mark Crusaders bits, Twilight's Epic Freakout in Lesson Zero and It's About Time, along with some fantastic Rarity and Rarity/Spike scenes in Sweet and Elite and Secret of My Excess. Fluttershy gets her due in a few episodes, and we also see the genesis of the whole "Rainbow Dash's wings are made of balsa wood" meme in Daring Do.
On top of all of that there are two two-part episodes in season two, The Return of Harmony and A Canterlot Wedding.
But what's to do when you've seen all the episodes, three or four times, and you need more pony?
Why, the Internet of course!
To help fill the pony gap, lets talk about our favorite pony, why they are your favorite pony, and what you hope to see from them in season 3.
Personally, I'm a Rarity fan.
I wish I could put my finger on it, but that certain something that Rarity has is elusive and hard to describe. While I tend to prefer her less dramatic side, the fainting spells and abhorrence to all things dirty, messy, and sloppy are strangely endearing. Adding to that, her generosity and willingness to help her friends, even at her own expense, is a quality that I have always admired. Yes, she is the most materialistic of the ponies, but she is also the most giving. This was in abundance evidence during Green Isn't Your Color when she put her reputation on the line in front of all the important ponies to cover Fluttershy's strange behavior on the catwalk. While she did misinterpret Fluttershy's desire to continue to be a model, she still took an enormous risk to help her friend find success in the very role that Rarity wanted for herself.
My favorite minor character pony has got to be Photo Finish. She is a parody of Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue magazine, sporting Anna's typically over-sized sunglasses, bob haircut, and brusk demanding personality. What really got me interested in that character was the large format folding field camera she carries around for her shoots. Conversely, another fancy and fashion oriented pony in the show is done in parody of Carl Langerfeld, who is a photographer in real life, but portrayed as a designer and design house owner in his pony life.
So what say you bronies? Who is best pony?
Oh, and as an added bonus, here is a link to one of the better pony parodies. Warning though, not for kids, or those with weak constitutions.
