I posted yesterday about Pastor Charles Worley of Providence Road Baptist Church (not to be confused with Providence Baptist Church) in Maiden, North Carolina. The good pastor had quite the issue with President Obama endorsing marriage equality. So much so that he made this proposal in front of his congregation:
I figured a way out--a way to get rid of all the lesbians and queers. But I couldn’t get it passed through Congress. Build a great big large fence, 150 or 100 miles long. Put all the lesbians in there. Fly over and drop some food. Do the same thing with the queers and the homosexuals. Have that fence electrified so they can’t get out. Feed ‘em, and- And you know what? In a few years they’ll die out. You know why? They can’t reproduce.
Yep, enclosed spaces surrounded by fences to keep gays and lesbians from society. Does that
sound familiar?
If this is new to you, check out my diary from yesterday.
Well, there are quite the updates on this story. Follow me below the fold.
Since the story first broke, it has gone viral. Reaction was swift. In fact, after receiving complaints, the host of the church's website apparently took the site down. A local group called Catawba Valley Citizens Against Hate is currently planning a protest action at the church on Sunday. We've sent a message loud and clear to this asshole that his hate speech is not acceptable and will be treated as the hate speech that it is.
Not that Worley has been moved. On Sunday, this is what he had to say to his congregation:
I talked a little bit, I believe it was last Sunday, on the homosexual lifestyle, and there was a whole lot of people who didn't like what I said. I want to read it out of the Bible, and then we'll go from there. Listen, all of the Sodomites, the lesbians, and all of the...what's that word? Gays--I didn't wanna say 'queers'--that say we don't love you, I love you more than you love yourself. I'm praying for you to be saved.
Oh yeah, Worley loves the gays, all right. He loves them as much today as he did in 1978, when he waxed nostalgic about the days when it gays could be hanged (not that they can't today, but apparently Worley doesn't follow the news).
Jeremy Hooper of Good As You has the clip. I'm having issues embedding it here, but here is the quote, taken from a 1978 sermon Worley delivered at Providence Road Baptist Church called
"Holding the Line":
We're livin' in a day when, you know what, it saddens my heart to think that homosexuals can go around, bless God, and get the applause of a lot of people, lesbians and all the rest of it! Bless God, forty years ago, they would've hung, bless God, from a white oak tree! [shouts of "Amen!"] Wouldn't they? [shouts of "Yes!"] Amen?
Dead homosexuals, praise God! Amen! Gotta love the good pastor's heaping helpings of Christian love!
Hooper points out:
The truly remarkable thing? Of all of his old sermons, this is one that someone at his church felt worthy of posting to the Internet for posterity's sake.
Yep, it looks like Pastor Worley hasn't changed a bit. Only this time, he's awakened outrage the likes of which he has probably never seen before. Dare I say, outrage of
biblical proportions.
