There was a "diary" posted today that received a lot of attention, and not in a good way. As of about 6:00 CT it had more than 360 views and 71 comments, but only two recs. Why only two? Because the "diarist" had posted a link. In fact, the diarist who goes by a female username (and hence I will use feminine pronouns) did not provide useful information for the reader, but instead wrote a paragraph intended to lead the reader to her blog.
Looking at her posting history, she has done this repeatedly and been rewarded with little notice. So today's notice may have surprised her.
In the Daily Kos community it is NOT considered good form to use diaries simply as teasers to other blog sites. She has been told this before. She objects, saying it is done elsewhere. Repeatedly today she was told it may well be done elsewhere, but it is not done here. She argued and objected repeatedly.
Here are some samples of comments made to her (and I have removed the commenters names, as I am not trying to call out the diarist, but to make the point of what is considered unacceptable here.)
Pardon me, but I don't think it's right to use a diary just as a teaser for your blog. I think the diary itself needs to contain some substance -- at least a precis -- rather than forcing people to click through to find out whether you have anything of value to say or not. Cross-posting would be even more welcome.
I've read your diary twice. All it basically says "I have very important and interesting information to share. But not here. You have go over here to find out what it is.". In short, you don't want to share the info - you want to generate clicks to your blog.
Repost in full or please don't post here. There is nothing wrong with posting a link to your blog in addition to posting the full article here, but otherwise it is considered bad form.
What you are posting is merely "teasers" - people are forced to go to your blog to get any useful information. Most links others post are for those who want to go deeper, or want to verify or credit at the original source; but the substance of the content is posted here. That is all people are asking for you to do. Give the full story here - link to yourself if you've got other tidbits, visual copies, want folks to use that as their source link if they repost the information, whatever. It's hard for me to be speficic because I can't view your blog - it is blocked on my computer - so I have no idea what wealth (or paucity) of additional information you could be sharing with us if you chose to.
This is why your postings here get few recs, few tips, few comments or discussion, BTW. Why do you bother posting here at all?
Over and over the diarist resisted, insisting that her form and format is acceptable at other forums. Frankly, it doesn't matter what is acceptable elsewhere. It is not okay here.
In all likelihood, this is the last time her diaries will receive much notice at all, and as you can see, it was not positive.
In summary, what NOT to do is use a diary only to link to your blog elsewhere. What TO do is post the entire blog post here at Daily Kos, or enough of it to provide significant information to the reader here. Then if you wish, you may also refer the reader to your blog for more information.
8:34 PM PT: Thanks for stopping and any comments you make. I'm going to bed and will respond in the morning.
